The new Star Trek movieHave any of you seen the new Star Trek movie? Would you give it a thumbs up or thumbs down?
Re: The new Star Trek movieThumbs down.
If you're going for effects, it's pretty good, but it stops there. It was too "Hollywood-ized". I did not like the story line, I did not like the choice of actors/actresses- the actor chosen for Kirk was the best one (other than Nemoy), but was still not great. Eric Bana and Carl Urban are good actors, in my opinion, but did not fit the roles they portrayed. I did not like the "feel" and "look" of the movie. I watch Star Trek because of the futuristic aspect- so why do a "prequel" set many years before any of the series? It doesn't seem all that futuristic comparably. That's also why I never cared for Enterprise, or even the Original Series for that matter. I think they should have chosen a better director, and instead of doing a prequel, they should have done a movie with the Next Generation Cast or something. I thought it was shallow - missing many of the facets that a good movie has. The other Star Trek movies always brought up some moral or ethical issue that raised questions of humanity. I felt that they were gearing for a younger audience, therefore tailored the entire storyline around the idea of using younger cast members. Instead of writing the storyline and then finding the appropriate cast members, it was as if they found the cast members, and then thought: "Hmmm.... How can we find a way to write them into the movie...?" I don't like it when a movie is supposed to be part of a franchise, and yet the movie has a total different feel from the other movies in that franchise. I also just don't like shallow movies- I like movies that are deep and thought provoking, have some sort of feeling to them. Like Million Dollar Baby, John Q, or The Changeling. I loved The Dark Knight. Which brings up the question of is Bruce Wayne actually just the facade for Batman? I loved the Bourne Trilogy. I thought the new Star Trek just had very little of what makes a good movie. It missed the mark by light-years... pun intended.
